Lightroom CC 2015.6 and Lightroom 6.6 have been released today, and the team have added a few new gems for CC subscribers, as well as the normal camera/lens support and bug fixes for everyone. (For the update links, skip to the end of the post.)

So what’s new?

  • CC only – There’s a new Guided Upright tool, which allows you to correct perspective by drawing lines on the image.

Lightroom Guided Upright vs. Auto

    • To use:
      • Apply Lens Profile in Lens Corrections tab.
      • Click the Guided button in the Transform panel.
      • Click and drag 2-4 lines on the photo, along lines that should be vertical/horizontal.

      • Fine tune the results using the manual Transform sliders if needed, including shifting it left/right/up/down the canvas using the new X/Y Offset sliders.
  • The Lens Corrections panel has been split into a simpler Lens Corrections panel and a new Transform panel for all users (but it’ll be missing the Guided button in the perpetual license version).

  • Performance Improvements in Develop
    • In CC 2015.6 / 6.6, Lightroom has become smarter about anticipating which photos you’ll edit next. When you’re working in the Develop module, it preloads the two photos either side of your current photo, so when you move on, it loads much quicker. This only applies when you’re working with originals, as smart previews are already quick to load.
  • Merge panoramas using smart previews when the originals are offline.
    • Until now, you could only do a panorama merge when the originals were available, but now it’ll work if you’re using smart previews too. A smart preview panorama is smaller than one created from originals, but it’s still useful when the originals aren’t available, if only for testing whether a merge will work well.
  • A Keyword Count is now available for stock photographers who need to apply a minimum number of keywords to each photo. To view the count, hover over the Keywords field in the Keywording panel when it’s set to Enter Keywords, and the count appears in the tooltip.

  • CC only – There’s a new Pending Sync Activity section in Preferences > Lightroom mobile tab, which documents sync activity to help track down any sync errors.

  • CC only – Deleting synced data is now done from the web interface to avoid accidental deletion.

Updated instructions for these changes are already waiting in the Members Area for owners of my Lightroom CC/6 book.

How do I update?

To update, go to Help menu > Updates or click the Update button in the CC app. The update servers take a while to push the updates around the world, to avoid crashing the servers, but if you’re in a hurry to update, here are the direct links to the patches: WindowsMac
