Lightroom CC 2015.4 and Lightroom 6.4 have been released today, with Nikon/El Capitan tethering fixes, performance improvements and new CC features, as well as the usual new camera/lens support and bug fixes. (For the update links, skip to the end of the post.)
So what’s new?
The Lightroom team have been busy working on performance, as well as a couple of other CC only improvements. Other smaller updates are listed with the bug fixes at the bottom of the post.
Performance
Thumbnails now update much faster when you edit multiple images using sync or copy and paste, and Lightroom’s now much smarter about preemptively building 1:1 previews, which means they load much faster when you’re zoomed in and flipping through photos, even if they weren’t built in advance. Also, panoramas should merge about twice as fast as they did in Lightroom 6.3.
Mobile Uploads Location (CC only)
Mobile users can now set the location and folder structure for photos added using Lightroom mobile or Lightroom web. You’ll find this in Preferences > Lightroom mobile.
Panorama Merge Boundary Warp (CC only)
Stitched panoramas usually have gaps around the edges. There are a number of options for filling in the gaps:
- Crop the edges off – however you may crop important details in the process.
- Use Content-Aware Fill in Photoshop – this works well but may need additional retouching to remove artifacts and results in a large rendered file on your hard drive.
- Lightroom CC 2015.4 has a new feature in the Panorama Merge dialog – Boundary Warp. It analyzes the image and warps it to fill the empty space. It has a slider ranging from 0-100, so you can choose how far to warp the image, and it retains the editing flexibility of the original raw files.

Loads of bug fixes:
There are loads of bug fixes. These are the main ones:
- The panorama merging process should complete roughly twice as fast as Lightroom 6.3
- Thumbnails update faster when editing multiple photos using sync or copy/paste
- Large previews build preemptively when navigating through photos in Loupe zoomed view
Import
- Tethering Nikon cameras on Mac OS X 10.11(El Capitan) did not work properly
- Import from iPhoto would result in all photos receiving a “pick” flag
- Importing folders that included videos could fail on some systems
- Import didn’t work if you weren’t signed in
Library
- In Lights Out mode, an image would “disappear” when using the Undo functionality
- Lightroom would not display the correct EXIF metadata for some video files generated by Canon, Fuji and Panasonic cameras
- SIGMA 50mm f1.4 ART lens was incorrectly identified as Zeiss Milvus 50mm f1.4
- If you swipe through photos on the Mac using a Magic Mouse, Trackpad or similar peripheral, Lightroom scrolls very fast. To disable this “speed swiping”, uncheck the new checkbox at Preferences > Interface > Swipe between images using mouse/trackpad
- Certain dates couldn’t be entered in Edit Capture Time dialog (1966, 1969, 1999, etc.)
- Videos wouldn’t play on some systems
Develop
- Crop reset to image edges when adjusting rotation via slider
- Improved quality when applying Auto Straighten and Upright “Level” mode
- Auto Sync of some settings failed when using smart previews
- Lightroom would ignore model-specific custom default settings for some cameras, including some Leica and Sony models
- Soft Proofing RGB readout values differed for the same file between 5.7.1 and 6.x
Photo Merge
- Vertical panoramas created using Merge could appear with the wrong orientation
- Metadata is now added to merged panoramas to support Photoshop’s Adaptive Wide Angle filter
Slideshow
Export
- Preset paths to Home, Documents, Pictures and Movies/Videos folders have been added to the destination pop-up menu in the Export dialog
Other Fixes
- Comments from Lightroom web come into Lightroom on the desktop as already “read”

How do I update?
To update, go to Help menu > Updates or click the Update button in the CC app. The update servers take a while to push the updates around the world, to avoid crashing the servers, but if you’re in a hurry to update, here are the direct links to the patches: Windows – Mac
